Unless you are a skilled home mechanic you should not attempt this. The step-by-step instructions on how to change a timing belt run to several pages along with detailed photographs in a do-it-yourself manual. That is much too long to reproduce here - the pictures cannot be included - and the material is protected by copyright anyway. Suggest that you try your local public library to see if they might have one of the commercially available manuals -or- that you purchase one from your local auto parts supply store.

The 1997-2001 Honda CRV with the 2.0L 4 cylinder uses a timing belt. 2002-up use a chain. The water pump is also driven by the cam belt. To save yourself money later on, replace the water pump at the same time as you replace the belt. The belt MUST be replaced at 105,000 miles or 10 years. Failure to replace the belt may result in severe engine damage as this is an interference engine.
