Assuming that whatever caused the check engine light to come on has been corrected, what has worked for me is to disconnect the battery and leave it disconnected an hour or so long enough for any residual current to leave the circuit board then connect the battery back up and it should be off. If it's not take it into a parts store such as Autozone that will do a free code check for you to find out what is causing the check engine light to come on.

If the Check Engine light is on, then you have a problem with the emissions system. Once the repair is made the light must be reset with an OBD2 scan tool. If you do not repair the problem the light will just come back on.
