Many Epson printers can have the ink level reset using a little program called: SSC Service Utility.
my answer is f*** epson ; get a CISS Continuous ink supply system and begin saving huge ammounts of money.... they automatically reset..... or you can buy online resetter for about 10.00..... CISS is the best!
This answer is related to the HP 940 cartridges for all HP 8000 or HP 8500 series printers:
Regulatory laws have now forbid printer OEMs from disabling printing because the software "estimates" that the cartridge is "empty". As long as there is ink available, you can continue to print even though the printer says "ink cartridge is empty". This is why Continuous Ink Supply Systems (CISS) are so popular.
The only time your printers software will reset the ink levels is when you put in a new OEM cartridge and it re-initializes to that new cartridge Smart Chip. You cannot reset the Smart Chips on the cartridges, because they are not Auto-Resettable Chips (ARCs). For the HP 940 cartridges, no one currently makes ARC chips, so the only way around this is to use the Smart Chips from your existing cartridges.
These pre-programmed "Smart" chips for the 940 cartridges will continue to function approximately two years BEYOND the date printed on the OEM cartridge. One company that has figured this out is Adaptive Ink (http://www.adaptiveink.com/index.html)
They have a lot of really good FAQs to answer these questions, and some awesome products too!
it's simple: you can't unless you know the proprietary "machine" code; can reverse engineer it; re-code it; re-compile it and install your "changed" version on the printer. No one's done that because tech has moved so fast we're now long past the "X" series, even the "Z" series. So, when the dialog comes up "do you want to print black and white using the color cartridge" ignore it; you'll notice at the bottom of the dialogue a "print" button. Hit it. You'll know when your non Lexmark cartridges are out by the print quality.
