Hawaiian is a VSO language. In other words it is a verb initial language. "ua 'ike ke kanaka 'i ke ali'i." The chief saw the man is, literally, saw the man the chief. In VSO languages, question markers occur initially.

It is in the family of Polynesian languages, but since Europeans and then others have brought their languages to the islands, it has broadened to include Hawaiian pronunciations of many foreign words. So for instance you have both "pure" Hawaiian words (such as "kai" meaning "sea") and imported words (such as "paniolo" which generally means "cowboy" but is the Hawaiian pronunciation of "Spanish" since Hawaiian has no real "s" sound, or "laiki" which is the Hawaiian pronunciation of the Chinese pronunciation of the word "rice"). It has unique grammar and word structure.

Aloha: There is no trick or special thing. You just have to learn the language as you would all others. It's tough though; I won't lie.
