Secret nailing of tongue in groove boards is done by starting the nail at the junction of the top of the tongue and the edge of the board, and driving it on an angle into the thicker part of the board and down into the supporting timber beneath. These nails will be concealed by the groove of the next board as it seats over the tongue.
A punch will be needed to drive the nail head flush into the board without damaging the board or tongue. In some timbers it is advisable to pre-drill a hole at a slightly smaller diameter than the nail in order to prevent the nail from splitting the board.
In some furniture work and cabinetry, when a fixing is to be concealed, a chisel is used to partially cut a small shallow piece of timber (rectangular in shape, with a tapering underside and left fully attached on the opposite side to the start of the cut). This is carefully lifted up far enough to allow a screw, pin or nail to be fixed in the bottom of the cut. Then glue is applied in to cut and the piece of timber is pressed down flush, and sanded once the glue has dried. The cut made is just big enough to allow the fixing to be placed underneath.
