There is a special timing chain tool kit that is used to set the engine cams at time with the crank. These tools are expensive and the task is a tedious process, but possible. The tool kit can be purchased by after market tool suppliers like OTC. Good Luck!

How do you get the rear timing chain out when you have pulled the engine 40L 1997 Explorer?

First let me say that I hope you have all the special tools necessary to align and install the chains. You will not get it right and you will do engine damge if you don't have all the special tools necessary. If you have the engine out, there is a knock out plug, similar to a freeze plug on the back of the block, located inside the bellhousing area, that you will have to knock out to access the rear jackshaft gear. That plug will have to be replaced when you go back together. The right valve cover has to come off, as does the left one, since at this point you have no choice but to replace all 3 chains, guides, and tensioners. Remove the knock out, and you will see the gear, and the bolt that holds it to the jackshaft. Then with the valve cover removed, you will see the cam gear and bolt. CAUTION! THE RIGHT BANK CAM GEAR BOLT IS LEFT HAND THREADED. UNSCREW IT IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION AS YOU NORMALLY WOULD! THE DRIVER'S SIDE IS NORMAL RIGHT HAND THREAD. Once you remove the bolts, removal is out the top. Slip the chain off the lower gear to get it out, gthen fish down in there for the gear. Remove the guides, then fish it all back down in the hole in pieces. IT becomes clear as you do it how it must be done.

You'll have to pull the heads and have the guides and seals replaced. Bad seals are usually an indication that the guides have worn as well.
