First, with spark plugs out, rotate the engine until the number 1 cylinder is at top dead center (TDC). Tighten the valve until only slight pressure takes up all slack. Then turn the adjustment nut 1/2 turn. Do the same for both valves. Now, rotate the engine 90 degrees, 1/4 turn of the crankshaft. Following the firing order, 1-8-... adjust each valve as you did for the number 1 cylinder. By grounding the number 1 plug with a wire attached to the engine, turning the distributor clockwise, and then turning on the ignition key, you can then slowly rotate the distributor countrclockwise until the spark plug fires. This should set the timing enough to start a freshly adjusted engine. Good luck!!
Find Top dead center of piston #1. Set timing from there. For more info, post question at Truckforum.com. All your answers are there. I go there for my chey questions all the time.

what is point setting for chev 350 v8 engine Use dwell meter to set the gap to 30 degrees dwell.
The timing on that engine is computer controlled. It requires an engine scanner to set the timing. No other way.
It sets in 0 degrees.
not enough for you to notice.
Rpm needs to be set at 800 - 900 .. that is factory setting.
12 degrees BTDC.
set the idle down on the carb
The timing on that year engine is computer controlled and you must have an engine scanner to set the timing. That engine has a cam and crank sensor and they must be in correlation / TIME with each other. Are you will have a check engine light on and poor performance.
