A book was published in the early seventies about making temporary furniture. I was reminded of it by the previous comment. It suggested ways to make temporary, cheap furniture and was titled "Nomadic furniture". One notable chair was made by cutting out an inverted "mouse hole" in a corrugated box and then filling the box with party balloons. The architect Frank Gehry made some famous chairs by laminating corrugated cardboard and then cutting the block into a stylised chair. Chairs can, and have been, made from nearly everything under the sun. If you want to make something more conservative, search for plans which are in the public domain. Also consider that high quality, fixable chairs are waiting in junk piles virtually around the world.
