"Wafting" is the method for detecting the odor of chemicals safely. It is taking a palm of the hand and circling it rapidly over the substance. A lower concentration of vapors should be inhaled.

∙ 11y agoThere is a technique that isn't overly refined yet called olfactory (rarely but sometimes used in conjunction with mass spectrometry etc).
There is also an item called the Drager tube which will sense the level of a specific chemical in an air sample.
