A double displacement reaction, or double replacement reaction, is a reaction between two compounds in which the cation of one compound takes the place of the cation of the other compound, and vice versa. This is easier to see in equation form:
AB + CD --> AD + CB.
To determine the product of a double displacement reaction, write the anions (the negatively charged particles) in the same order on the right side of the equation as what they are written on the left side. Then write the cation of the first compound beside the anion of the second compound on the right side, and fill in the cation of the second compound beside the anion of the first compound. From here, you will need to correct the compounds (ie, equalize the charges between the cations and anions by using subscripts) and balance the equation so you have the same number of atoms of each element on each side of the equation (using coefficients).
To determine if the reaction would take place, you will need to consult a metal reactivity chart (to see if the Mg would displace the Al, for example) and a solubility table (to see if the products would both be aqueous).
