You should see a doctor immediatly. It sounds like the tatoo parlor was not clean or sterile with their tools. This is a slight exageration. A lot of the times, the artist will not mention that the tattoo is only half done when you leave the parlor. The other half is with the healing. Also, since the majority of doctors never see a tattoo heal, they will almost always say that the tattoo is infected. Note that I am a tattoo artist, and there could be a couple of things that could be affecting the tattoo. First, depending on the area that you where tattooed. If it is an area that is prone to swelling (ie foot, hand, ankle, knuckles, ect), then it will be red and swullen for a couple of days. Second, what ointment or lotion are you using? A lot of times, various lotions will contain additional chemicles in them that will irritate an open would, which is essentially what you have. Hundreds of Thousands of small pin marks in your hand. The other thing is that the artist may have overworked the skin, which makes a harder heal. Some things to try: +first, talk to the parlor that you got the tattoo from, and see what they recommend. + Second, maybe a diffent lotion to put on the tattoo. Here, and pretty much a lot of shops around the US are recommending: Cocoa Butter (but some people have had some small outbreaks of rashes and ingrown hairs), Curel Hand Lotion (top recommended), and then many shops are trying out Aquaphor (which I have had much success in healing my own tattoos) + take into consideration if you have any blood-sugar problems. I heal rather hard due to hyperglycemia, as do hypos and diabetics. Magenta ink will contain red pigment. Some people are allergic to the materials in red (and only red) ink. If the rash continues well past the healing phase, you should consult a dermatologist. *****You may also consider trying A&D ointment and Lubriderm hand lotion on your tattoo, but you should only use the lotion once that tattoo has started pealing.-Shocker

Tattoo rash???? Hmmmmmn, I reckon your talking about a rash forming during the early healing stage....This is usually due to using an anti-biotic oinment, not that it's a bad idea....just some folks react to anti-biotic oinments....3 outta every hundred people react to neomycin, one of the three parts of neosporin and triple antibiotic, had it been 5 people they would have to add a disclaimer to their advertisments...Try using Bacitration or just switch to a good skin moisturizer, one w/o fragrances or coloring agents...Hope this helps.............................

You can get your tattoo to hurt less by cleaning it frequently with antibacterial soap, and applying an unscented lotion on it after it dries. Make sure you only put a thin layer of lotion on it, and don't use any with vitamins in it, because that may cause burning. Also, don't wear anything that rubs on it, and DO NOT POKE AT IT!
