Don't brush it, that is the worst thing you can do. I use Pantene gel for curly hair to make the curls more uniform and not so crazy which keeps them a little more in order. Overnight if I want to preserve some curls you can tie a pony tail on top of your head. Sometimes it works great, other times it doesn't. Also there is spray that keeps your hair from moving to much, but i do not use it because it always looks so unnatural on me, but maybe it will look better on you.
Unfortunately there is not much more that you can do.
