on a potable water system you can either use a water hammer arrestor or an air chamber. An air chamber is a length of pipe with a cap on it (6"-8") facing up
Bleed the accumulated air out of the system. I did it twice a year, to improve heating efficiency, and eliminate banging noises.

I've never heard that in my house, but the pipes could be freezing or something.
You have a lose pipe somewhere -- In wall or under house
The pips in a steam heating system need to be insulated to prevent condensation. Condensation can lead to mold and or freezing of the steam pipes in the winter.
