You can either subtract the whole number portions, then subtract the numerators, or you can convert the mixed numbers to improper fractions, subtract the numerators, and simplify.

For example, 3 5/7 - 2 1/7 can be handled as 3 - 2 and 5/7 - 1/7, or as 26/7 - 15/7; either way, it's 1 4/7.

How do you subtract fractions with mixed numbers and like denominators?

Convert them to improper fractions and proceed.

How do you add and subtract mixed numbers?

SUBTRACTION: You first turn both mixed numbers into improper fractions. If needed, change the denominators into like denominators. Next, subtract the two improper fractions and reduce if necessary. ADDITION: If needed, turn denominators so they are the same number. Next, add and reduce if necessary.

How would you add or subtract fractions with like denominators?

The same way you would add or subtract whole numbers, leaving the denominators alone.

How do you add or subtract rational numbers with common denominators?

you subtract the top 2 numbers and then leave the denominators the same like: 7/8-4/8=3/8. Get it?

Do you have to regroup mixed numbers that have like denominators when subtracting them?

No

How do you add and subtract unlike denominators?

you make them have like denominators by multiplying so many times that they have the same denominators or you can make them have like denominators by multiplying the two

How do you subtract fractions with like denominators?

Subtract the numerators as we normally subtract them and then divide the resultant by the denominator. It's just simple like that.

How do you add and subtract rational numbers with unlike denominators?

You first find equivalent fractions whose denominators are a common multiple of the different denominators. Teachers like you to use the least common denominator: that is not necessary although it can result in your working with smaller numbers and so make things easier.

Why are two fractions converted into like fractions?

Because you can't add or subtract fractions that have different denominators. Making them like fractions, by multiplying so the denominators are the same, you can add and/or subtract them.

How can you use a model to subtract fractions with like denominators?

No. You just have to change it so the denominators are the same, and then it's easy from there!

How do you add and subtract by fractions?

If the fractions have the same denominator, add and subtract the numerators as if the denominators weren't there and put the result over that denominator. Reduce if possible. If the fractions have different denominators, find the LCM of the denominators and convert the fractions to equivalent fractions with like denominators. Then add and subtract the numerators as if the denominators weren't there and put the result over that denominator. Reduce if possible.

How do you subtract mixed numbers and borrow from the whole number?

you subtract mixed numbers by changing them to improper fractions. to borrow from a whole number you take away one like 5 changes to 4 and then you change look to the other mixed number your subtracting by and write its denominator as 4s denominator.
