Assuming its a CRT monitor...
1. Do not place any objects on top of the monitor which could block the ventilation holes.
2. Periodically blow the dust off the top, back, sides and bottom (anywhere that has vent holes) with an aircan.
3. Keep magnets and any source of magnetic fields away from the monitor.
4. Plug the monitor into a good quality surge protector or battery-backup system.
5. Clean the screen with a soft non-abrasive cloth & glass cleaner. (but not while the monitor is powered on)

Keep in mind that your computer will not be of much use to you if you don’t have a computer monitor in good condition. You have to treat the monitor as something fragile, something that has to be handled carefully, even if does look like something that will withstand the pressures that you subject it to. After you have set up the monitor and the computer, it is now time to think of ways on how to take care of your precious gadget.
Whenever possible, make sure that you place the monitor in an area where it will not be exposed to too much heat or dirt. Make sure that you also clean the surfaces and the rear area regularly, to make sure that dust does not accumulate in those places; dust can lead to vents and small spaces being clogged, which can prevent the monitor from efficiently working. You also have to make sure that the space around the monitor is free of other items, to allow the air to flow freely around it. Keep any gadgets with magnets away from the monitor, as they can interfere with the monitor’s processes. When planning on cleaning the monitor’s screen, do this with the use of a soft, non-abrasive glass cloth and cleaner; you should also make sure that the monitor is unplugged before cleaning.
When you do the things mentioned above, you can be assured that you are contributing on prolonging your computer monitor’s life. A high-quality monitor will last a longer time if taken care of properly, and if treated with loving care. If you religiously take proper care of it, you can avoid the unfortunate incident of your monitor conking out on you, just when you have something important to work on with your computer.
