I've had good success with rewarding successive attempts. For example teaching them to get into my hand I started with giving a treat when they came to the cage door. Then they had to touch my fingers for a treat. Then they had to get into my hand for a treat. Once they got that far they pretty much had that trick down.
It all depends on what trick you want to tech them. But first you need to make a bond with them. Holding them lots, calling their name lots, playing with them, ect. Once you have established a good bond with them you can teach them to do all sorts of tricks such as tight rope walking, boxing, begging, and so on.
It really depends on what trick you want it to do. As i dont have pet gerbils, i reallycant help. Sorry!!
