You just tell the individual that you care for him, and let him know that there is nothing wrong with who he is. It is just in terms of your compatibility that you two want different things and ultimately pursuing a relationship which in essence is "being in a relationship just to be in one" will lead to hurt down the road. If he's not the one, he's the one for someone else... just not you. Be strong, and think hard before you do this because you are going to have to be the strong one and deal with it and resist calling him to talk to him. You will also have to give him time to heal from it. Because no matter how you look at it, break-ups stink and someone ends up feeling rejected.
