the difference is one of them has thouroughbred or quarter horse in it the other doesnt

A horse of any breed that has any of the various spotting patterns (except for those

associated with Appaloosas) can be registered in the Pinto Horse registry. This includes Paint horses.

A paint horse has been bred for spots as well as stock work, racing and (like the quarter horse) has several physical types for the purpose of showing english, western, reining, etc. On the whole they are genetically similar to the quarter horse and Thoroughbred...because the registry has concentrated on using these breeds to produce type once the spotting patterns were fixed in the breed.

The Paint horse began as 'Crop outs' from the Quarter horse breed, who's owners and breeders did not want 'excessive' white on their horses. The American Paint Association also allowed Thoroughbreds to be registered with them, thus adding more bloodlines to the breed. Pinto is actually just a marking, but horses with pinto markings do have their own registry, it's based solely on color and not bloodlines however.

The terms Pinto and Paint are oftentimes used interchangeably, but the Pinto can also be referring to an American Horse Breed of horse called the Pinto. The Paint is also an American Horse Breed, but both terms are oftentimes used to describe a colored horse with white patches.

Answer:I always thought that a pinto is referring to a horse that is black with white patches, and Paint as a horse that is brown or chestnut with white patches. The terms are used interchangeably, but it really depends on the coat colouration of the horse to determine whether it should be used interchangeably or not. Horses that are speckled brown and white are more commonly termed Paint over those with big white and smooth patches over their body with black, brown, chestnut or mahogany, which are most commonly referred to as Pinto.

A paint horse looks like it has been "painted". It will have large patches of white across it's body, in several different patterns - piebald, tobiano, overo, tovero, sabino.

Appaloosas have spots of white, not large patches of white. They can be white with colored spots (leopard), or traditionally are a base color with markings - blanket, snowcap (or blanket with spots), snowflake. There is also something called "Varnish Roan" - looks like a regular roan, except it's actually an appaloosa pattern, and it affects all areas except bony places. Easily identifiable by mottled skin and white sclera.

There are so many differences between Arabians and Paints, first off Arabians have have refined, wedge-shaped heads, a broad forehead, large eyes, large nostrils, and small muzzles. Most display a distinctive concave or "dished" profile, whilst Paints are a stock breed and exhibit a fuller head and less refined features. Arabians are one of the top ten most common horse breeds (I'm not sure what number they are), Paints are number two. Paints are known for their colorful coat patterns and Arabians do not exhibit colorful markings. Arabians dominate endurance because of their stamina and speed, while Paints dominate western pleasure and other western riding classes because of their ability to collect and go slow with a natural self carriage. Paints are known for their level headedness, while Arabians are known for being "hot" horses with mass amounts of energy, which makes them so good at endurence. The conformation on these horses is also a huge difference; Arabians are known for their regal, high head carriage, and paints typically have a neck that comes flat out of the shoulder, which gives them a relativley flat head carriage.

There is much, much more, but these are some of the basic differences.

Actually, they can be called either one. Their coat is white with "paint splotches" of a different color. These horses used to be used by Native Americans more than 100 years ago. So basically they can be called either paints or pintos.
