∙ 13y agoSome say that it may be possible by anal probing; others say even biologists can hardly tell without disecting them. Of course, at spawning time it is easy to tell - if they are fat with eggs, then they are female. Also, generally only females grow to the larger sizes.
If we are talking largemouth bass, the females are generally larger, but there is much size overlap in the species. A male six years old, will be around 18 inches long, and weigh around three to four pounds. A female of four, will be about the same size. A female six years old will be around 22 inches long and weigh five to seven pounds. Bass in southern areas are normally larger than those from cooler climes.
Also, females are generally darker on top than males, being almost blackish, while males are more olive green.
