A ground rod is a metal shaft used for grounding. With plastic pipe now being used for water systems these rods are now being used for services and other devices to be grounded to the earth.

The grounding system at a building provides an easy path for electricity to flow to earth should a problem, such as a short circuit, occur. Allowing current to flow to earth through the ground system helps assure that a circuit breaker will trip or fuse will blow should a problem occur.

Electrical code usually requires 2 rods to be driven into the earth or ground.

These rods are to be driven in the ground at least 8 ft. These rods, when made of iron or steel, shall be at least 5/8 inches thick. Non ferrous rods should be:

• free of paint or any other non conductive material
• shoud be listed and
• not less than 1/2 inch thick.

Most codes call for a ground system of 25 ohms or less. While, as a practical matter, you can't get to zero ohms, you certainly can get to 25 ohms if the ground rods are properly installed. A single electrode consisting of rod, pipe, or plate that does not have a resistance to ground of 25 ohms or less shall be augmented by one additional electrode of any of the types specified above. Where multiple rod, pipe, or plate electrodes are installed to meet these requirements, they shall not be less than 6 feet apart.

The resistance of this code ground is intended to be 25 Ohms or less, but is rarely tested.

A ground cable of the appropriate size can be connected to:

• a pair of grounding electrodes;
• a metal water pipe entering the building from outside;
• a strip footing which contains metal in contact with the earth;
• the metal casing of a private well. (Excellent grounding by the way.)

The procedure for grounding the neutral bar in the service panel to ground rods is basically as follows:

You procure 2 ground rods from a local electrical supply place. You will drive the rods into the ground near the electrical service. You run a ground cable of the appropriate size (see gauge chart above) from the rods to the "Neutral" bar in the fuse box. You clamp both ends with an appropriate clamp on the ground rods and the neutral bar. Now you have effectively "bonded" the neutral bar to earth ground which is to proper electrical code in most areas.

If you do not understand what a neutral bar is, or where it is located in the service panel, or are unfamiliar with the above description, do not attempt to do this procedure. Have this done by a qualified electrical contractor.
