A automotive volt and amp tester is best but you can determine voltage with just a volt meter connected at the battery. Start the bike, run the RPMs up to about 2,000 and hold it there for 30 to 45 seconds. See if you have a rise in voltage to about 13.7 to 14 volts. (considering the battery itself is in good condition) no Low state of charge or bad cell. This test will tell you at least the alternator is producing voltage and the regulator is working. I would be more suspect of the regulator as the alternators on Harleys are not that notorius for failing. Just for your information, the alternator runs on the left side of the engine crankshaft inside the primary cover. I was doing some heavy duty hotrodding on my modified 86 FSXTC when I spun the outer housing of the alternator and had to pull the primary cover, chain and front engine sprocket.

there is no alternator per say. your charging system consist of a stator which is behind the clutch assembly and a regulator which is on the front of the frame. check to make sure the plug under the bike has not come unplugged. it runs from the reg to the stator.
Either the gauge or the voltage regulator device on the charging system has failed.
There is no generator on a 1994 FXR. The charging system is an alternator located on the engine output shaft inside the primary cover.

Modern Harleys have an alternator that not only keeps the battery charged but also provides power for the lights, horn, etc. It works in conjunction with the voltage regulator which controls how much of the alternator's power goes to the battery and how much goes to accessories. Harley Big Twins built before 1970 used a generator instead of an alternator.

No ..well you can but if battery is bad then the engine will shut off when you remove the jumper cables because of the way that H-D has their regulator /alternator wired you must have battery voltage to tickle the alternator to produce voltage, if battery is simply "low" then you might be sucessful.
yes

2 of the most common problems are the stator and the regulator. I just had a friends ultra glide do the same. He replaced the reg and it blew out because the stator went bad. Your best bet is to have dealer check it out.
