its rarely easy without diagrams but the only advice i can give is either to start at the power source (battery) and follow it to the faulty device until you find the short somewhere in between the two or sometimes its easier to fallow the fault from the devise back to the power source this might sound over simplistic but the fault has to be between the two points power---------------------device but always remember it could be a negative(earth)problem as easily as a positive power problem hope you can find the fault
possible short. have an auto electrical shop trace the problem.
You get a test light and a multimeter and trace the wiring.
Short in the electrical sytem. A reputable garage should be able to trace it down to the component that is causing the problem.
Unfortunately the question is "how long is a piece of string?" It depends on how easy it will be to find the location of the short, and how accessible that location turns out to be. It might take 20 mins to trace it and 5 mins to fix, or it might take 3 hours to trace, and 4 hours to strip out the dash to get to it.
In electrical terminology it is called a conductor. On PC boards it is called a trace.
