It depends on 1) where in Brooklyn you are coming from (Brooklyn is almost 100 square miles in area), and 2) what method of transportation you plan to use (bus, subway, car).
Without this information, your question is too vague to be answered. Please ask another question and include 1) an exact address or cross street in Brooklyn (or at the very least, a neighborhood), and 2) a method of transportation.
You can also see the Related Questions below for more information.
By car: Take the Verrazano Bridge to Brooklyn and follow the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (I-278) to Queens. Take Exit 44 to Astoria Blvd. West. Turn right on 43rd Street, right on Ditmars Blvd., and left on Hazen Street, and go straight ahead across the Rikers Island Bridge to get to Rikers Island.
By public transportation: Take the Staten Island Ferry or one of the express buses to Manhattan. Take the subway to Queens Plaza (on the E, M or R train) or Queensboro Plaza (on the N, Q or 7 train), and take the Q100 bus to Rikers Island.
The only access to Rikers Island is the prison bridge.
On Public TransitBy Subway and/or Bus
There are two ways to get to Rikers Island by public transportation: the Q100 or Q101 buses, or the Rikers Island van. The van travels over the Rikers Island Bridge to the Rikers Island Visitors Center.
The Q101 originates in Manhattan, at East 59th Street and Second Avenue. It will take you to Hazen Street and 19th Avenue in Queens, which is the entrance to Rikers Island. You will have to transfer here to the Q100 bus to travel over the Rikers Island Bridge to the Rikers Island Visitors Center.
The Q100 originates in Long Island City at 28th Street and Queens Plaza South, and continues to the Rikers Island Visitors Center.
The van currently makes one stop in Manhattan, one in the Bronx, and one in Queens. A Brooklyn stop and a second Queens stop are listed as "coming soon." To simplify things, this answer will give directions only to the stop in the Bronx. If you want directions to one of the other stops, please ask another question, for example, "How do you get to the Rikers Island van stop in Manhattan from 3rd Avenue and 6th Street?"
See the Related Link below for more information about the Rikers Island van, or call 718-568-5685.
To get to the stop in the Bronx, take the 4 or 5trains (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line) or the 2train (of the 1-2-3, the red line) to 149th Street-Grand Concourse.
You will exit the subway at 149th Street and Grand Concourse. The Rikers Island van departs from 149th Street between Anthony J. Griffin Place and Park Avenue. Walk 1.5 blocks east on 149th Street to 149th Street between Anthony J. Griffin Place and Park Avenue.
To get there on the Q100 bus, take the R train (of the N-R-Q, the yellow line), or the E train (of the A-C-E, the blue line) or the M train (of the B-D-F-M, the orange line) to Queens Plaza. Then exit the subway and walk 2 blocks along Queens Plaza South (where the Queensboro/59th Street Bridge runs) to 28th Street. The bus stops at 28th Street and Queens Plaza South.
Note that Queens Plaza and Queensboro Plaza are two completely separate stations. The N and Q stop at Queensboro Plaza. Only the R stops at Queens Plaza.
Like the van, the Q100 bus makes other stops, but to simplify things, only directions to the Queens Plaza stop are given here. For directions to other stops, ask another question, for example, "How do you get to the Q100 bus to Rikers Island from 60th Street and 4th Avenue in Brooklyn?"
As mentioned above, the Q101 bus originates at 59th Street and 2nd Avenue in Manhattan. The closest subway stop is the 59th Street Station (at Lexington Avenue) on the 4-5-6 and the N-R-Q. The next closest stops are the F to 63rd Street-Lexington Avenue, and the E or the M to Lexington Avenue-53rd Street.
Again, for directions to other Q101 stops, ask another question.
You can take the Rikers Island van ($8 one way, $13 round trip), but the cheapest way is to take the Q100 bus, which originates in Queens and then travels over the Rikers Island Bridge to the Rikers Island Visitors Center. If you use a pay-per-ride Metrocard (not Single Ride tickets), you will only have to pay 1 subway fare each way ($4.50 in total), as pay-per-ride cards give you a free transfer between the subway and the city buses.
Directions to the Bronx Van StopTake the Staten Island Ferry to the South Ferry-Whitehall Terminal in Manhattan. Entrance to the South Ferry-Whitehall Street station is included inside the ferry complex. This is actually 2 connected stations, the South Ferry station on the 1 train (of the 1-2-3, the red line), and the Whitehall Street station on the R train (of the N-R-Q, the yellow line).
Take the Uptown 1 train from South Ferry to Chambers Street. Transfer at Chambers Street to the Uptown 2 train, and take the Uptown 2 to 149th Street-Grand Concourse in the Bronx.
The Rikers Island van departs from 149th Street at Anthony J. Griffin Place. Walk 1 block east on 149th Street from Grand Concourse to Anthony J. Griffin Place.
You can call the van service at 718-568-5685.
Directions to the Q100 Bus in QueensTake the Uptown R train from Whitehall Street to Queens Plaza. Then exit the subway and walk 2 blocks along Queens Plaza South (where the Queensboro/59th Street Bridge runs) to 28th Street. The Q100 bus stops at 28th Street and Queens Plaza South.
