There is no one treatment that is effective for every individual who suffers from Trichotillomania.

Some are helped by cognitive behavior therapy, or behavior modification therapy whereby therapists attempt to identify what "triggers" the hair pulling behavior and then seeks to interrupt that process.

Others are helped with drug therapy, mostly medications of the SSRI class, which are often used to treat depression or obsessive compulsive disorders.

More researchers believe that Trichotillomania may be caused by environmental factors, such as unhealthy chemicals found in food and beverages, the air, in water and even in household cleaners, mouthwashes, toothpastes and more.

Trichotillomania is a psychiatric condition that essentially can be classified as chronic hair pulling behavior that requires an understanding and effective treatment prescription for its gradual relinquishment. There is not enough room here to discuss it, but there are several good websites which go into its causes and effects as well as it treatment. I have listed them in the related links section below. I hope they will help you.

I have Trich and my therapist found an article from the University of MN a few years ago that found (accidentally, I think, as they were studying something else) that N-Acetyl cysteine (NAC) is effective in helping with urges to pull. The only form available that the doctor could order was a liquid and I almost threw up...tasted like sulfur!! However, we later discovered that it's an over the counter supplement that you can buy at GNC or co-op for pretty cheap (like a vitamin). I've been taking it for almost 3 years now and it's helped immensely!! I currently don't have many lashes but I ran out of NAC and haven't gotten more (it's hard to remember it's important when urges are so low...then once urges hit, it's hard to want to stop for some reason...just a really old, ingrained habit maybe!? I don't know!!!)

It's certainly not a cure but it makes me really sad that NAC isn't common knowledge!!!! After only a few weeks of being on it, I had lashes again for first time in 10 years. Thank you, researchers!!!

Hope this helps!

Trichotillomania. This condition includes the pulling of hair in other locations of the body as well. As a medical/psychological problem, it was first noted in medical literature in 1885. Why do you have trichotillomania?

Currently, psychologists think that it is caused by an emotional unbalance. People without trichotillomania are able to regulate their stress and boredom (overstimulation and understimulation) whereas people with trichotillomania seem to be incapable of balancing these out naturally. Therefore, they turn to pulling for the balace that they need. Hope this helps!
