Metal that's liquid at room temperature is Mercury, which is extracted from its ore by heating the ore in a furnace. This will kill the operator if proper environmental controls are not in place, so some ancient societies (the Romans in particular) used it as a death sentence. Metal that's solid at room temperature is liquified by heating it. For extra entertainment, some metals melt at very low temperatures. One example is gallium, which is non-toxic and melts at 86 degrees Fahrenheit. It's very expensive, but if someone was really rich and really wanted to mess with someone's head, that person could get some gallium and cast a fork out of it. The fork would melt in the victim's hand. Now you're thinking, "what good is metal that melts at low temperatures?" All schools have sprinkler systems, as do offices, factories and stores, so next time you see a sprinkler head look at it. There's a little gray piece of metal holding it together. When the temperature of the room gets to about 200 degrees F, the little piece of metal melts and activates the sprinkler, which puts the fire out. It's also used in "fusible links" in cars--when the wiring heats up enough because of a short circuit or something, the fusible link melts and shuts the power off before your battery blows up. It's also good for making real tin soldiers--instead of a melter that can set your house on fire, you can melt the metal in a pot of water on the stove.
