Not sure about the 98 but on my 2002 you step through the info screen and when it comes to perform service (usually for an oil change) you have to hold the reset button for at least 30 seconds before it resets. It's extra long so you don't reset it by accident. Hope this helps, John ajdickert@verizon.net
you reset it by hitting step until you see "miles remaining to service" then you hold reset button and it will change to 3000
To reset the "Perform Service" light on a 2007 Jeep Commander, turn the ignition to the "ON" position without starting the engine. Press the gas pedal three times within ten seconds, then turn the ignition off. This should reset the service light. If the light remains on, you may need to check for any existing issues or consult the owner's manual for further instructions.
The easiest way to reset the 'perform service light' on a 2003 Jeep Cherokee is to disconnect the battery for a few minutes. If this does not fix the problem, try turning the key on, but do not start the vehicle. Pump the throttle 3 times and turn the key off. Then start the vehicle. If the light is still on after that, there might still be something wrong with the vehicle.
Turn the ignition on, engine off. Press the brake pedal down twice, then the gas pedal twice in ten seconds. Key off, then on and should be reset.
