Medical professionals use stethoscopes primarily for two things: lung sounds and measuring blood pressure. One can also use it to listen to a person's bowel sounds.

When taking someone's blood pressure, a stethoscope is used to listen to the person's pulse as you increase the air pressure on a sphygmomanometer (blood pressure cuff). After inflating the cuff, the air in the cuff is released slowly until the pulse is heard. The air continues to be released until the pulse is no longer heard.

The stethoscope is also used to listen to lung sounds by placing it on the chest in several different areas.

Proper medical training is recommended, although it is not required, to use one.
