How do you use parachute in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas?

just jump of a tall building and then u get a message, that u must press fire to open the parachute and then press fire.
(PS2 version) When you're on a high building, make sure you've got the parachute already on your back, then jump. when you're about half way in between the top of the building to the group, or a bit before that. Press O once or twice and it should open, then just drift to where ever you wanna go.

If you were to jump out of a plane, you would activate it in order to drift safely down to Earth instead of falling and killing yourself .
