A hypothetical anecdote is used in stories to help illustrate their points. They are short and comical or fascinating situations that usually require the reader to think about something possibly happening. These often include the words "what if."

"A question, based on assumptions rather than facts, directed to an expert witness intended to elicit an opinion."

This is the definition for a hypothetical question. A hypothetical situation might be a game of pictionary, I don't know..

Well, anyway, an example of a hypothetical question might be:

"If you were stuck on an island with nothing to eat, would you eat your arm or leg first?"

Hypothetical is something that is based off of a hypothesis. An example would be a sentence that describes some type of fictitious or imaginary statement. Basically, a story that posits a hypothesis. Or a story that makes a point. The word is more likely used in the phrases "hypothetical reasoning," or a "hypothetical situation."

Which form does a verb take to express a hypothetical situation?

Hypothetical sentences usually have an "if clause" and a "result clause". The "result clause" contains a modal auxiliary verb (would, could, should, etc.) and the verb in the "if clause" is usually in subjunctive form. Conditional (hypothetical) sentences can be confusing because they use past tense verbs to express present tense conditions. If I were you, I would rethink my actions.(Notice that "were" is not the typical singular first person conjugation of "to be".)That sentence is hypothetical because it is not possible for "I" to be "you". The sentence is also present tense. If she were rich, she would travel the world.Again, that sentence is hypothetical (contrary to fact). "She" is not rich. It expresses a wish, and it is also present tense.

Use hypothetical in a sentence?

Since the word 'hypothetical' refers to a situation that is only being entertained in the mind, for it has not happened in reality, or to a situation that you wish people to believe has not happened, you can frame it in a number of ways: 1) Hypothetically, if I told you that I robbed a bank today, what would you do? 2) That is a hypothetical question, I hope? 3) I present to you the hypothetical situation that we left New York at 3:00. When would we have arrived in Connecticut? 4) Sure, your crazy idea would work... in a hypothetical world. 5) He constantly talked in hypotheticals, presenting one insane situation after another.
