If putting your hand stitched quilt in the washing machine frightens you, I would recommend hand washing it and letting it air dry. Usually it takes a long time to dry because of all the layers, so try to squeeze out as much water as possible.
Hand quilting is the process of piecing, backing and finishing a quilt by hand. Some of these steps may be done on a machine and then the final quilt polished by hand. To do the quilting step by hand, you will need to secure the three layers (top, batting, backing) together and stretch the layers taut. Starting with a threaded needle knotted at the free end of the thread, come up through the backing to the top, then start stitching along your pattern or the edges of pieces you have selected.
