First make sure the breaker is shut off. If you look closely at the back (depending) on the outlet, it should have X,Y,W, or G by each screw, meaning it is a 4 conductor outlet and is used in a 240 Volt application, X= HOT 120 v, Y= HOT 120 v (hot wires are commonly black and red but can be any color other than white, grey, or green), W= Neutral (white), G= ground (bare or green). Strip the ends of the wires out to the specified length and tighten under corresponding screw or clamp, hot wires are not specific to either X or Y meaning it doesn't matter which hot goes to which hot terminal. Be sure to get good solid connections, and be sure to tighten screw firmly, bad connections are a common place to get hot spots or fire hazards.

The Nema L6 is a 3 wire 250V twist-lock the 30 indicates the amperage rating of 30amps. There will be two black screws and one green screw. The application this receptacle is most commonly used for is a straight 220V application for motors or heating elements that do not need a nuetral wire to carry the unbalance load back to ground as required for a lamp or iluminated display. The black & red wire {or the white of a 2 wire cable can be phased or taped red identifying it as a "B" phase "current carrying conductor"} and they will terminate to the two identicaly colored screws or the slots provided in the back for screw compression. The ground will be green or bare and will terminate to the green screw slot. As stated the equipment to utilize this plug should not any requirements for a nuetral wire {white}, if so the L6-30 2 pole 3 wire receptacle should be replaced with a 3 pole/4 wire L14-30. Keep in mind the rating is 30 amps and #10 wire should be used regardless of the equipments power demands. A 20 amp breaker can be installed if the 30 amps is to large, but the wire needs to be rated the same as the receptacle. Hope this explains your question and any related subsequent queries that may follow. I will put this on my watch list if you have any further questions. Good Luck and remember to de-energize and safe off the breaker before working on any electrical, as it is the most unforgiving of all utilities when not properly installed.

p.s. follow the wire stripping gauge on the back of the receptacle and wrap solid wire around screws and compress stranded wire using the slots provided.

You can do a 30 amp twist lock receptacle 220v 3 wire (nema L6-30R) or a strait blade 30 amp 220v 3 wire receptacle (nema 6-30R) or a traditional 30 amp dryer plug. The nema # is a universal # that everyone uses to identify that plug. Ask for it. The most important part is the 30 amp male that your trying to plug in. Match it up with what you putting in the wall. Use #10 gauge wire for 30 amps

Is there an adapter for a NEMA 14-30 plug and a NEMA 10-30 receptacle?

A NEMA 14-30 is a 3 pole 4 wire grounding receptacle rated at 30 amps 125/250 volts. A NEMA 10-30 is a 3 pole, 3 wire non grounding receptacle rated at 30 amps 125/250 volt.As the NEMA 10 device has no ground terminal on it, it is not a standard receptacle device so no adapter is made for it.

How do you rewire a NEMA 5-20 plug with a standard 3 prong plug?

A NEMA 5-20 plug is a standard 3 prong plug. It wires the same as a NEMA 5-15 plug (Ground wire to the "D" contact, Hot to vertical terminal and neutral to the horizontal terminal (with the Ground terminal either at the top or bottom)).A 5-20P plug has the neutral blade rotated 90°. The 5-20R receptacle usually has a T-shaped neutral hole, to accept both 5-15P and 5-20P plugs.

Where is the neutral wire on a nema 6 20r connector?

The NEMA 6-20R is a 2 pole 3 wire grounding receptacle that is rated for 250 volts. It is not meant to have a neutral wire connected to it. The receptacle is designed to have 240 volts connected to it.

How do you wire a Nema L5-30 plug?

An L5-30P is a two pole three wire grounding 30 amp, 125 volt plug . The neutral wire is connected to the W terminal, the ground wire to the G terminal and the hot wire to the only terminal that is left. The small blade/slot is neutral (white), the larger blade/slot is hot (black) and the notched blade/slot is ground (green).

Yes. Use 10awg wire, mindfull of length voltage drop.

How do you tell the difference between a nema 6-15 and nema 6-30 plug?

The NEMA 6-30 is larger than the 6-15; the diameter is larger, the prongs are larger. In any case, they should already be labeled with their ampacity.

On a 3 wire plug is the wider blade hot or neutral?

On a 3 wire plug (NEMA 5 configuration, 125v 2 pole 3 wire grounding) the narrow blade is the "hot" lead, the wide blade is the neutral lead, and the U shaped prong is the equipment grounding conductor (EGC). Most 2+G non-metallic-cables (NMC) are color coded for Black = "hot", White = neutral, and Bare = EGC
