A needle should move about when you hold the compass horizontal to the ground. The needle is usually colored red. You first need to know which side of the needle is pointing North. In the direction that side of the needle is facing, is North. Change the direction you and the compass are facing, so the needle and North labeled on the compass match. The compass may or may not have additional directions, but East is right, South is down, and West is left.
