Drabbles are tough! They have to be exactly 100 words.

Here's how I do it:

  • Plot out my story -- it has to be a really short scene, too
  • Write a really rough draft and count how many words it is -- it'll be way over 100
  • Rewrite the rough draft into a shorter version. You'd be surprised how much you can cut out and still have the main idea come through!
  • Count those words and cut again!

You will end up with the "bare bones" of a scene, no frills, no extra bits. This is a great way to learn how to cut out all the extra stuff that usually isn't needed in a story.

To write a drabble, start by focusing on a single idea or moment. Keep it brief, typically 100 words long. Consider using sharp dialogue or imagery to convey your message efficiently. Edit and revise to make every word count.
