The 9 speed shift pattern is the same start as a regular 5 speed having reverse at the top left. The upper and lower range of the transmission is chosen by means of a lever switch, choosing first the low range, (lever down for 1st thru 5th gears) ...then the upper range. (Lever up for 6th thru 9th) 1st gear is left and down, and progressing to the regular H shift pattern for 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th. The air splitter lever is then flipped up (high range), and the H shift pattern is repeated for 6th thru 9th gears. The upper transmission range is never used for reverse.

R 2nd / 6th 4th/ 8th

1 3rd / 7th 5th/ 9th

First gear is such a low gear it is usually only used when pulling a loaded trailer. or have a low powered truck.

Just like any other unsynchronised transmission. All the way to the left and forward is your reverse gear. Straight back from there is first gear, which you'll likely never need unless you're rolling across a scale that requires you to go extremely slow. Forward and one step to the right is second gear, which is what you should be starting off in, especially when loaded. Pull directly back, and you find third gear. Forward and one more step to the right is fourth gear, then directly back from that is fifth gear. Upshifting from this point, you'll flip the range selector up, then go to the position you went to for second gear. With the range selector up, this is now sixth gear. Pull directly back, and you're in seventh. One step forward and to the right, and you find eighth gear. And directly back from that is ninth gear. The shift pattern is a basic "H" pattern, and this is also the basis of the 8LL, 13 speed, and 18 speed transmission.

That's the shift pattern. As for actually learning how to shift it, I'd recommend a truck driving school. These are unsynchronised transmissions, and cannot be shifted in the same manner in which you'd shift a normal passenger car - doing so will destroy your gearbox. This is something you need hands-on training to learn, as the driver is required either to double clutch or float the gears and catch the next gear in the appropriate RPM range to compensate for the lack of a synchronising gear in the transmission. This is not something you will learn simply by reading about it, but I will try to explain the process.

When upshifting, once you reach your desired RPMs (schools will teach you 1500 RPMs, but it could be 1500 to 2000 RPMs, depending on the situation and motor), you press in the clutch just far enough to disengage the transmission. Then you pull the transmission out of gear, and take your foot off the clutch. You then depress the clutch again, and put it into the next gear once the motor has dropped to the desired RPMs (when you're taught to begin upshifting at 1500 RPMs, you'll typically be taught to go into your next gear at 1000 RPMs).

When downshifting, you get down to your desired RPMs (schools typically teach 1000 RPMs in this instance, or 700 - 800 RPMs if dropping two gears at a time). You depress the clutch and pull it out of gear. Then you have to give the accelerator a quick push to get the motor up to the desired RPMs to catch your next gear down (in school, you'd be taught 1500 RPMs). For a beginner, your best advice is to tach your motor above this (maybe to 1700 or 1800 RPMs), so that you can catch your gear when the motor winds down to 1500 RPMs. After you tach up your motor, you depress the clutch again, and shift into the next lower gear when the RPMs are at 1500.

It sounds complicated, and it is at first. Once you've done it for a while, it becomes second nature. But, as you can see, it's not really something you want to just read about and then try doing. You really need hands-on training for this.

How do you shift an 8LL overdrive speed transmission?

Same shift pattern as a 9 speed. Youtube has a great video straight from eaton fuller on it that would be better than me typing it.

View shift patterns for semi-truck?

The Eaton-Fuller and Rockwell websites should have them. Google images will be able to find images, as well.. you just put in "8LL shift diagram", "9 speed shift diagram", "10 speed shift diagram", etc.

Can you give the shift pattern of a 12 speed eaton fuller?

I've never heard of an Eaton Fuller 12 speed, nor am I able to find any references to one via Google. I've driven Eaton Fuller 8LL, 9 speed, 10 speed, 13 speed, and 18 speed transmissions - could you be thinking of one of these? IIRC, Volvo marketed a proprietary 12 speed transmission, and Meritor offered a 12 speed automatic, but not Eaton Fuller.

How do you shift a 9 speed Volvo FE?

Depends on whether you have the synchronised gearbox (more common in Europe) or the unsynchronised gearbox (such as an Eaton-Fuller or Rockwell).

What is the Shift pattern for Eaton Fuller 18 speed transmission?

It's the same as the shift pattern for the Eaton Fuller nine speed transmissions, albeit with additional gears on the low side. For the sake of not wanting to type out a long winded explanation, there is a related link posted - 'Eaton Fuller 18 speed shifting diagram'. Click on that link to see a visual representation of the shift pattern.

What oil is used in a 18 speed eaton auto shift transmition?

50W synthetic, or 70W mineral.

Can a 13 speed eaton fuller transmission be converted to an 18 speed just by changing the shift handle?

No you cannot change a 13 to a 18 speed, however you can change a 18 speed to a 13 speed just by changing the shift knob.

Keep rpm between 1400 to 1600

Can you convert an eaton fuller 13 speed to an 18 speed just by changing the shift handle?

No you can not, it is a different transmission. The 18 speed has a splitter for the lower range as well as high range.

What does the gear splitter on an eaton fuller 9 speed transmission look like?

9 speed doesn't have a gear splitter, just the range selector.
