By focusing on the side of Mayella's face that was beaten up (the right) which would have resulted in Tom using his left hand; however Tom could not use his left hand as it was crippled; Bob Ewell is left-handed so therefore the evidence is clear that it was Bob Ewell who beat Mayella up. Also, Bob never called a doctor which is strange considering her physically condition.
Atticus proves that Bob Ewell is left handed. Since most of Mayella Ewell's injuries were sustained on the right side of her face, then she was most likely beaten by a left handed person. Tom Robinson couldn't use his left hand because of an accident when he was younger, therefore, he couldn't have beaten Mayella.
Atticus makes Bob Ewell write his name in court to show that he is left-handed. This is to suggest that Bob Ewell was the one who attacked Mayella Ewell, since the injuries on her face were consistent with a left-handed person.
Atticus wants to establish there was never a doctor called to verify Mayella's injuries and to get Heck's description of her injuries (on which side of her body were the majority of the bruises). Later he proves that Tom Robinson couldn't of assaulted Mayella because the side of her face that the bruises were on (the right) would of required Tom to hit her with the arm that he disabled years ago (the left), and could no longer use. After that he proves that Bob Ewell is left handed, and he was far more likely to of been the one to hit her.
When Sheriff Tate is testifying Atticus leads him to remember that Mayella's black eye, and other injuries, are on the right side of her face. This is significant because it implies a left handed attacker, and Tom Robinson's left arm is useless.
Atticus made Bob Ewell write his signature to prove that he is left- handed. Bruises were found in the right side of Mayella's face. Usually, someone who is left handed would usually hit on the right side. Tom Robinson's left hand was damaged by a cotton gin when he was younger, so he most likely couldn't have committed the crime.
Atticus had Mr. Ewell write his name to show that he was left-handed. The girl was beaten by someone who lead with his/her left hand. Tom Robinson could not even use his left hand, therefore he could not have beaten her; just proving further that the trail was a farce. Atticus was trying to suggest that it was Mr. Ewell who beat Mayella, not Tom--Mr. Ewell was left-handed, and Tom couldn't even use his left-hand. Atticus then proceeds to question Mayella about her home life*, further driving his point home. He is trying to show the court that Mr. Ewell is left-handed. Therefore, it would be easy for him in give Mayella her injuries since they were on the right side of her face. Also, Tom Robinson's left arm is crippled due to a cotton gin accident. Therefore, it would have bee almost impossible for Tom to cause Mayella's injuries.
Yes he did. It was that his left arm was somewhat shorter then his right. Mayella Ewell was said to have been punched in the right eye. When Atticus asked Mr.Bob Ewell (Mayella's Father) to write his name, he was writing with his left hand. This was one of the best build on Atticus's case. <><><> Actually, Tom could only use his right arm- the left had been injured in an accident, and did not work. It would have been impossible for him to have choked her and hit her at the same time.
When Mayella is on the stand the question Atticus asks that makes her furious is "How?" She has just described how Tom Robinson choked and beat her, and Atticus asks Tom to stand up. This draws the jury's attention to the fact that Tom's left arm is useless, making it highly unlikely he was Mayella's attacker. When Tom stands, Atticus asks Mayella if Tom is the man who attacked. When she responds that he is, Atticus asks, "How?"
No, his right hand was crippled. Yes it was. Recall that Atticus demonstrated Bob Ewell to be left-handed, and then used that as evidence to show Ewell could have done it, and similar evidence showed that Tom couldn't have, because that evidence was that his left was crippled.
Atticus asks Mr. Bob Ewell to write his name on a piece of paper while he is cross examining him. Mr. Ewell writes his name with his left hand, so he is left handed, which proves that Tom Robinson could not have raped and beaten Ms. Mayella Ewell, because Tom Robinson's left arm is completely crippled from an accident he had long ago. Ms. Mayella Ewell had been beaten on the right side of her body. Atticus shows that it was Bob Ewell who beat Mayella, but due to the racism in Maycomb, Tom Robinson was wrongly convicted as a black man.
Mayella as in from the book 'To kill a mocking bird' by Harper Lee'? If so, the book suggests that her father was quite incestual (?) and had sex with his daughter. She gives this away at the trial of Tom in court when he was convicted of raping her. Tut tut.
