Is Harry Potter a book series which carries on every book or is it just a new book every time which isn't related to the other one before it?

There were seven books in the Harry Potter series, which devote one year to Harry's experiences and adventures during each of the seven years of Hogwarts School. Each book builds on the previous ones, and by "Half-Blood Prince", you'll spend a considerable amount of time going back to check on the previous volumes.
