How does Japan affect global warming?

Japan burns fossil fuel (coal, oil and natural gas) in industry, to power its transport and to generate electricity. All this combustion releases long held carbon dioxide (CO2) which adds to the natural greenhouse effect. The earth's carbon cycle cannot deal with all the extra CO2 so it remains in the atmosphere trapping more and more heat. This is causing global warming.

Almost 80% of Japan is sustainably forested, however, Japan imports all the wood it needs from British Columbia, Papua New Guinea, Siberia, Chile, Ghana and New Zealand. So Japan has transferred its deforestation to other countries, some of which may not be sustainable. Deforestation removes forests that absorb and store carbon, so it is a serious contributor to global warming.
