Thanksgiving is usually a very good day for sports. Given that many families in America are together on that day, the TV audience is widely increased, giving nationally shown games a greater significance. One example of this is the annual Thanksgiving day football game in Detroit. This game gets higher viewer ratings than most other regular season football games. Other sports like hockey have recently jumped on the bandwagon to increase the viewership of the sport (ex. Thanksgiving Showdown 2011: Boston Bruins vs. Detroit Red Wings)
