There is no "winter equinox". Equinox is spring and fall. It is the Winter Solstice, and it happens when the earth reaches the extreme of it's orbital inclination and begins to reverse the inclination in the opposite direction. The days begin to get longer in the northern hemisphere, and shorter in the southern hemisphere.
Our planet orbits our Sun. It make one complete pass around the Sun in ~365.25 days. This in itself does not cause seasons. The fact that the Earth is tilted off the orbital plane by ~23 degrees is what causes us to experience seasons.
