It's actually usually the other way around. Sows (female bears) send out pheromones to let the boars (male bears) within and around the area that she is in heat and receptive to being mated with. She will either go and find a mate or a male will find her. When there's more than one male to one female, then a bear-brawl begins to see who's bigger, stronger, and more fierce, hence the one who is most likely to breed with the sow. When the rut is done, both parties go their separate ways.
