All insulating covers and blankets trap heat by preventing the movement of body heat away from the individual. One way is to catch radiation (infrared heat) and the other is to prevent air from carrying away heat through circulation. Wool absorbs the radiated heat, and most is not re-radiated from the opposite (top) side. Additionally, the thicker material blocks air flow from reaching the person beneath, creating a warmer air layer between the bedding and the blanket. Using only cotton sheets allow more of this warmed air to "leak out" through the thinner fabric.
Because of the microfibers and the cloth that is use.
