The bolt that consists of an inclined plane (threads) wrapped around a shaft that is turned by a lever (wrench) and engages into a nut uses the mechanical advantage of the two simple machines to develop a substantial clamping force that would be difficult to develop with any other sort of fastener. A rivet can perform the same function in certain applications but it cannot be removed and re-used.
