Usually pale-skinned brunettes with lighter eyes look the most natural as redheads, but salon colorists can do wonders choosing the right shade of red for your skin tone. I'm normally a dark brunette with pale skin/green eyes and the colorist layered copper-red and blonde highlights---now most people think I'm a real redhead. The best rule of thumb is just to ask people you trust, and have them give you a blunt opinion on which color they think would flatter the rest of you. If bright red doesn't work you can always do a dark auburn, which is must closer to brunette and easier to maintain.
