Most moths rely on camouflage to protect themselves from predators. The ones that blend in with their surroundings will have a higher rate of survival.
The peppered moth in England is a good example of this. They were originally light with dark speckling. A dark form appeared and became more prevalent during the industrial revolution, purportedly due to soot-covered environments. With that change, the light-colored moths were more easily preyed upon by birds. In recent years with cleaner air, the lighter forms are making a comeback.
The color of a moth is what protects them in their environment. They are able to blend in and not be seen by predators.
If a moth stands out it will be easier to be seen and eaten by its natural predators.
Also, in groups, they are more difficult to distinguish individually, so their predators become confused.
