Best hint is lack of heat cycles but not always reliable as up to 20% of mares continue to show some heat signs for one or more cycles after becoming pregnant and a few continue all the way through their pregnancy. Best bet....have the vet do an ultrasound within 2-3 weeks after the mare was covered by a stallion or bred. This will not only detect pregnancy but will show if there are twins....a very high risk situation for the mare. Ultrasound is good for most of a pregnancy although they are harder to read later when the foal is bigger. Palpation is good for determining pregnancy from about 14-15 days (with a good vet) up to about 4 1/2 months after which it is hard to feel the foal as it has dropped below the pelvic rim in the mare's abdomen and most vets simply can't reach far enough to feel it. Palpation becomes possible again later in the pregnancy (8-9 months) as the foal has grown large enough to be closer to the pelvic rim again. You can also have hormone levels checked but I can't remember exactly the days that this test is reliable.
