The sound on a Flute is produced by blowing quite a lot of air over the hole on the mouthpiece. Flutes have an oval hole over which you must blow. But to do this you must have the right mouthshape, the shape used for spitting rice is appropriate. Then you blow lots of air over the hole. If you blow into the hole, no sound can be produced. But you must blow lots of air, because some of the air escapes when blowing across.

The flute player blows across a mouthpiece that has a hole. The air is blown across the hole instead of into it- that makes the sound. It's like when someone blows across the top of a soda bottle and it makes a note. The sound travels down the tube of the flute where the player can change the pitch of the sound. Opening keys with the fingers usually raises the pitch (makes it higher), whereas closing keys generally lowers the pitch. Hope that helps!

The stream of air you blow into the flute is directed across a hole inside and this makes the air vibrate.
