The marimba is quite fun to play and is also laid out similarly for musicians familiar with a piano. The play the marimba you use mallets to strike the bars of the instrument which produces tones. By combining multiple mallets and using sheet music, you can make beautiful music with a marimba.

A Marimba works by striking the wooden bar with a mallet (typically yarn), which makes the sound travel through the pipes directly below, making the sound resonate. The different sized wooden bars and tubes make the different pitches and sounds.

As in tuning a marimba? A very complicated process, something to be done only by an expert craftsman. There are too many things that can go wrong if a novice attempts to do this themselves. The process requires removing ever so minuscule amounts of wood from the arch in very certain places. Then the bar has to be sanded. Not for the faint at heart. If you've never done this before don't even try it. Hire it done.

You tune it to any note, take timpani mallets, and hit them near the edge.
