It's a simple hall effects switch. It has a magnet and sensor. As the sensor spins on a shaft, it passes close to the magnet or the other way around. the close pass sends a signal that is used to tell the distributor when to fire a plug wire. It's called a pickup coil because it "picks up" the signal.

Do single coil guitar pickups have to have an unbroken copper coil in order to work?

A single coil pickup can possibly work with a break in the copper, but usually there will be a problem with the sound in some way i.e. weak or cutting in and out. You can either repair an obvious accessible break with solder, but if the break's location is unknown, you will need to rewind the whole coil. There are several companies that you can mail your pickup to who will rewind or alter a pickup for you.

How do you test a pickup coil for a 1994 gmc Yukon 5.7?

To test the pickup coil on a 1994 GMC Yukon 5.7, first disconnect the wiring harness from the distributor. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the pickup coil terminals; it should typically read between 500 to 1500 ohms. If the reading is outside this range or shows an open circuit, the pickup coil is likely faulty and should be replaced. Additionally, you can check for voltage while cranking the engine; no signal may indicate a bad pickup coil.

Why is it called a pickup coil?
