Rabbit manure (or pooties ;) makes wonderful garden fertiliser! It doesn't need to be composted prior to adding it to your garden. Rabbit urine is alkaline, not acidic, so what rabbits leave in their litter-boxes is excellent for roses, vegetables, or even indoor plants! Work it into the dirt to help improve poor soil, or use to replace peat-moss.

Using rabbit pooties will also discourage wild rabbits from eating what your garden produces! Because the wild bunnies smell the presence of "other" bunnies, they will assume that another warren has already "claimed" that bit of territory and stay away!

You're probably referring to coprophagia, which all rabbits do. All herbivores need some way to deal with the low amount of nutrition that plants provide. Many mammalian herbivores have two stomachs, so that they can digest their food in one stomach, regurgitate it, and swallow it again to a different stomach, which would lead the food to the intestines. But rabbits have only stomach, and most of their digestion takes place in their large intestine and caecum (as opposed to the small intestine, as in humans, or the stomach). Thus, rabbits' digestive systems are insufficient to extract all possible nutrition from the plants they eat. So their solution is to swallow their faeces. After a rabbit's food is digested for the first time, it is excreted as faeces. These faeces are called cecotropes. Cecotropes are soft and still contain minerals, proteins, and other nutriment that the rabbit failed to digest. So the rabbit eats these faeces, digests the nutrients that it failed to digest the first time, and defecates again. The new faeces do not contain the nutrients, so the rabbit does not eat them. The process of eating faeces is called coprophagia.

i am a proud bunny owner myself and have had rabbits since the age of twelve.

cleaning out is simple and very beneficial.

things you will need:

non dusty shavings (the dust can irritate sensitive eyes, noses and ears)

fresh hay (i use horse hay for mine because it is generally better quality than air tight bags)

small dustpan and brush (for lifting and brushing out the dirt)

anti ceptic floor or wood wipes (kill the bacteria inside the hutch)

a good fly spray or repellant (one from the vets i use one that poisons and kills flies and maggots)

remove all dirty shavings and bedding also scrub all of the excrements from the bottom (if stuck) to the hutch, a dirty hutch will lead to flies which can lead to fly strike (flies lay eggs inside the rabbits fur, when the eggs hatch the maggots burrow inside and begin to eat your poor rabbit, almost all cases of this the rabbits will die). use the wipes to thoroughly clean the empty hutch, allow it to dry for a few minutes then spray with the fly spray to help protect your rabbit (also spray it on the rabbits coat around its back legs, back and bum)

put shavings in the hutch ensuring to put a thicker layer in the corners or in any places the rabbit wets more to absorb the urine. layer a small amout of hay in the sitting area and fill the bed area up quite high (rabbits like a deep comfy bed, the females may line this with fur which you should try not to remove as it causes distress as it is her nest)

make sure you sweep up the area around the hutch and clean all food bottles or bowls well and refil ready. you should check the water is coming out so your rabbit does not dehydrate.

+ a clean, safe and warm living environment will extend the average life expectancy (8-11 years) higher.
