It doesn't.

A speedo only measures the speed you're travelling at, at that particular moment.

But you can get distance, if you stay at an even speed, and keep track of how long you've been going. Speed x time = distance. One hour at 50 MPH means 50 miles travelled. 1/2 hour at 50 MPH means 25 miles travelled.
